Pope Leo XIV: A Bridge Between Worlds

On May 8, 2025, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of the United States was elected the 268th pope of the Roman Catholic Church, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. Born in Chicago and a member of the Order of Saint Augustine, he becomes the first American pope in history. With years of missionary work in Peru and a deep pastoral presence, his election signals both a continuation of Pope Francis’s global vision and a historic milestone for the Church in the Western Hemisphere.

In his first words from the balcony overlooking St. Peter’s Square, Pope Leo XIV greeted the world with a simple message: “Peace be with all of you.” He emphasized humility, unity, and compassion—values reflected throughout his career, especially during his time leading the Vatican’s Dicastery for Bishops. His choice of the name Leo XIV honors Pope Leo XIII, remembered for championing workers’ rights and modern social teachings.

Reactions across the globe have been swift and emotional. Many American Catholics expressed pride and hope for renewed energy in the Church, while world leaders praised his inclusive spirit and record of service. With his unique background, dual U.S.-Peruvian citizenship, and deep experience in Latin America, Pope Leo XIV is poised to bring a pastoral, bridge-building approach to a Church facing both internal reform and global challenges.
