Minister of Power Cautions Against Nuclear Power Plant Expansion Plans

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has urged the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC) to reconsider its proposal to construct four nuclear power plants, each with a capacity of 1,200 megawatts. Adelabu expressed concerns over the immense financial and safety implications of such an ambitious undertaking, particularly in a nation still grappling with energy infrastructure challenges and limited technical capacity.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting, the Minister emphasized the need for Nigeria to prioritize more practical and cost-effective energy solutions, such as renewable energy, natural gas, and improvements to the existing power grid. He noted that while nuclear energy has long-term potential, the country is currently not adequately equipped in terms of regulatory readiness, risk management systems, and public awareness to embark on a project of that magnitude.

Adelabu called for a phased and cautious approach, recommending that the government invest in building local expertise, strengthening safety protocols, and ensuring transparent stakeholder engagement before moving forward with any nuclear development. He reiterated the ministry’s commitment to diversifying Nigeria’s energy mix while ensuring that public safety and fiscal responsibility remain top priorities.
