The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has clarified the circumstances surrounding the arrest of Martins Innocent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, citing multiple petitions alleging financial misconduct.
In a public statement, the Commission noted that Otse was invited for questioning following several petitions submitted by members of the public. These petitions contained serious allegations of financial crimes, which the EFCC is legally mandated to investigate. Despite multiple formal invitations sent through his known addresses and communication channels, Otse allegedly refused to honor the summons.
The EFCC emphasized that its decision to arrest Otse was strictly based on the gravity of the allegations and not influenced by his past criticisms or public commentary directed at the Commission. While acknowledging the suspect’s prior unguided remarks about its operations, the EFCC stated that such matters would be addressed by the appropriate authorities and were not a factor in his current detention.
According to the Commission, a lawful Remand Order was obtained to justify his continued custody. Otse has since been granted administrative bail, and will be released upon fulfillment of all bail conditions.
The EFCC expressed appreciation for the public’s interest and engagement in its activities and encouraged continued support. However, it cautioned against speculative narratives that may misrepresent the Commission’s intentions or integrity.
“The EFCC remains committed to carrying out its duties without fear or favor,” the statement concluded, adding that charges will be filed once investigations are concluded.
