Sports betting is booming across Africa in 2025, thanks to mobile access, a young population, and a love for sports. These six countries are leading the way:
1. South Africa
The continent’s largest betting market. Online betting brought in ZAR 28.97 billion in 2024, mostly from football, rugby, and cricket. Mobile betting dominates.
2. Nigeria
Over 60 million Nigerians bet daily. Football, especially European leagues, is king. Mobile wallets and apps drive 80% of activity.
3. Kenya
One of the highest gambling rates in Africa. About 84% of adults have bet, mainly on football, with 88% using mobile phones.
4. Ghana
Online betting revenue is set to hit $57 million by end of 2024. Football makes up over 76% of bets. Crypto is becoming popular for transactions.
5. Uganda
71% of Ugandans engage in betting. The industry brought in USh 2.1 trillion in early 2023, with football as the top sport.
6. Tanzania
Known for frequent low-stakes betting. Around 71% bet, and 31% do so daily. Mobile payments like M-Pesa are key drivers.
